Visiting Downtown Boston: Your Weekend Guide

Downtown Boston

A place where colonial leaders once called home, and the area's residents traded on the wharves and in shops along the waterfront.  This area is characterized by charming cobblestone streets, historic buildings from colonial America, and a thriving atmosphere associated with higher education and academia. Much of downtown's street pattern dates from the 17th century. Contrary to legend, cows did not lay out on Boston streets, although some of the streets between Washington and Tremont were once cow-paths leading to the Boston Common. Buildings lined Washington Street in colonial Boston early on. In today's Downtown area, numerous attractions can be found, such as the Old State House, Faneuil Hall Marketplace, the Financial District, the Boston Common, and the Public Garden. Above all, this area is known for its historic architecture and enviable style.

This guide to Downtown Boston is perfect for those planning a New England getaway: A weekend jaunt filled with historical intrigue, Art Deco hotels, world-class dining, and enough cultural attractions to make sure your first trip Boston will definitely not be your last.

Let’s Begin!

A downtown hotel recommendation is easy, Hilton Boston Downtown/Faneuil Hall. It’s story begins in 1928, when Boston received their very first Art Deco Skyscraper. The Hilton Boston was originally known as the Batterymarch Building. Designed by architect Harold Field Kellogg, the hotel is situated in the heart of downtown Boston's Historic and Financial Districts, blending 1920's style with all the modern conveniences. The Hilton Boston Downtown/Faneuil Hall, a prominent feature of the Downtown landscape for almost a century, illustrates the care and attention Bostonians place on the preservation of the city's history. In 2023, the hotel's redesign will be completed and ready for a new generation of guests. We were given an exclusive look at the redesign (and updated rooms) and are excited to share this sneak peek with you!
